Skrīvele Skrivele, Māra Mara
Research on orchard fertilization, especially on the effect of mineral fertilizers, was started in Latvia only in the middle of the last century. Century already wrote about their types in the first half, however only according to the results of other countries’ research on the amount of certain mineral elements in plants, for their meaning, as well as about the processes that take place in one from plant parts such as leaves. Only at the end of the thirties was already written about the whole nutrient flow and its effect on the growth of fruit plants and production. I. Dimza and A. Gross are the first and for now the only scientists in Latvia who in Pūre between 1956 and 1990 performed various long-term, also multifactorial field trials in fruit and berry growing, especially in fertilizers application and obtained data mathematical processing using modern methods. Topics discussed in the article: (1) the methods for determining the usefulness of mineral fertilizers in the orchard, (2) if fertilizing fruit trees with minerals is needed, (3) the importance of crown formation in plant development, (4) minerals and soil microorganisms, (5) plant roots and uptake of minerals, (6) soil looseness.
