Compared to other fruit plants, the assortment of strawberry varieties in the garden can be changed quite easily and quickly, and since many seedlings are imported, the varieties the offer is very wide, including various selection novelties. However, not everything that is widely advertised in foreign plant catalogues is suitable to our climate. When choosing varieties, especially if you want to install a large one planting must be very careful. Those varieties that have proven themselves well in local conditions are recommended for cultivation. One of the options is to set up a small collection plantation on your own farm, where you can evaluate which variety is better, or also consult with other growers who have similar growing conditions. We also evaluate new varieties and hybrids at the Institute of Horticulture as far as possible. Field studies are carried out in Pūre, while tunnel cultivation is evaluated in Dobele.
