Currently in Latvia Japanese quince is considered an important fruit crop. In recent years, the Institute of Horticulture (IH) has carried out extensive research, but after getting acquainted with commercial plantations in various regions of Latvia, it was concluded that there are serious challenges that require a solution: (1) In most plantations, seedlings are grown, which do not ensure uniform, high-quality production, therefore, work is being done on the selection of new breed candidates from the breeding material available at IH; (2) Setting up plantations requires a lot of manual work, so mechanization possibilities are being sought; (3) At present, processing is limited mainly to the production of candied fruit, syrup and juice, several new technologies have been developed in IH laboratory conditions, including reducing the amount of added sugar in candied fruits, they are currently being tested in industrial production. Work is underway on the development of new products, incl. addressing the mass use of lower quality fruit.
