A preliminary project on production of long bean seeds (var. MKP 5) on peat was conducted at MARDI Jalan Kebun Klang,Selangor from February to May 2003. Standard field operations and crop management on peat was followed. To ensure production of good quality seed, latest crop production and seed processing technology were also used. This included crop isolation, cultural practices, rouging, pest and disease control, proper maturity at harvest, seed extraction, seed drying and cleaning as well as proper packaging and labeling. A total seed yield of 177kg was obtained from 0.40ha production plot (437kg/ha). Based on seed testing, the average moisture content of the seed lot was 9% while germination percentage was very high (98%). Economic analysis showed that large scale production of long bean seeds is feasible . This paper highlighted the important steps in commercial production of long bean seeds on peat in Malaysia.
