En la última década en Colombia, se han hecho considerables inversiones para la construcción, conservación y pavimentación de carreteras, sin embargo este proceso no sólo ha tenido que superar factores institucionales, políticos, climáticos y topográficos sino también múltiples desafíos técnicos y tecnológicos (Armesto & Díaz, 2018). Con relación a estos últimos, el uso de nuevas técnicas y tecnologías es frecuente cuando es necesario que la superficie de la carretera posea una vida útil más larga o que cuente con propiedades especializadas (Casey & McNally, 2008). Una de las técnicas comúnmente utilizadas en la construcción de pavimentos es el uso de mezclas asfálticas modificadas. Estas mezclas son usadas con el fin de mejorar características mecánicas de las mezclas tradicionales, como por ejemplo resistencia a deformaciones por factores climatológicos y de tránsito, reducción de agrietamiento y la susceptibilidad de las capas asfálticas a las variaciones de temperatura (Riaño, 2013). Además se busca mejorar la respuesta que experimentan las mezclas cuando son sometidas a diferentes condiciones de carga (estática, monotónica y/o cíclica) y del medio ambiente (Rondón & Reyes, 2015). No obstante el rendimiento satisfactorio del asfalto modificado, éstos dependen del control de algunas propiedades, como la temperatura y el tiempo de mezcla con el aditivo o polímero (Read & Whiteoak, 2003), que al no ser consideras, permiten que el material sea expuesto a condiciones que promueven el envejecimiento prematuro y rigidización del cemento asfáltico, alterando las propiedades físico-químicas del material y por ende la durabilidad de los pavimentos asfálticos, incidiendo en implicaciones económicas y ambientales (Vargas & Reyes, 2010). A razón de lo expuesto anteriormente, al evaluar la influencia que tiene la temperatura y el tiempo de mezcla en asfaltos modificados sobre sus propiedades, se podría contribuir a superar algunos desafíos técnicos del diseño de materiales asfálticos, asimismo mejorar la calidad de los pavimentos, ampliando su vida útil y ofreciendo un mayor control de las propiedades esperadas. Finalmente cabe mencionar, que el presente estudio se justifica por cuanto posee valor teórico, utilidad práctica, relevancia social, ambiental y económica. Además la temática de estudio demuestra la versatilidad y el amplio campo de acción de los Ingenieros Topográficos.

In the last decade in Colombia, considerable investments have been made for the construction, conservation and paving of roads, however this process has not only had to overcome institutional, political, climatic and topographic factors but also multiple technical and technological challenges (Armesto & Díaz, 2018). In relation to the latter, the use of new techniques and technologies is frequent when it is necessary for the road surface to have a longer useful life or to have specialized properties (Casey & McNally, 2008). One of the techniques commonly used in pavement construction is the use of modified asphalt mixes. These mixtures are used in order to improve the mechanical characteristics of traditional mixtures, such as resistance to deformations due to weather and traffic factors, reduction of cracking and the susceptibility of asphalt layers to temperature variations (Riaño, 2013). In addition, it seeks to improve the response that mixtures experience when they are subjected to different load conditions (static, monotonic and / or cyclical) and of the environment (Rondón & Reyes, 2015). Despite the satisfactory performance of modified asphalt, these depend on the control of some properties, such as temperature and mixing time with the additive or polymer (Read & Whiteoak, 2003), which, since they are not considered, allow the material to be exposed to conditions that promote premature aging and stiffening of asphalt cement, altering the physical-chemical properties of the material and therefore the durability of asphalt pavements, influencing economic and environmental implications (Vargas & Reyes, 2010). Based on the foregoing, when evaluating the influence of temperature and mixing time in modified asphalt on its properties, it could help to overcome some technical challenges in the design of asphalt materials, as well as improve the quality of pavements, expanding its useful life and offering greater control of the expected properties. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the present study is justified in that it has theoretical value, practical utility, social, environmental and economic relevance. In addition, the subject of study demonstrates the versatility and wide field of action of Topographic Engineers.
