The soil together with moisture provides the physical base of agricultural production. Quantity and physical base of agricultural production from any piece of land are conditioned to a great extent by nature and characteristics of soil in its upper layer. The loss of this valuable top soil results in deterioration of land to such an extent that the land use pattern exhibits a poor subsistence character. The deterioration of land, depletion of soil fertility is a continuous process and a natural phenomenon. The programme of soil conservation and maintenance of soil fertility is, therefore, an essential programme considered prerequisite for maintaining and increasing agricultural production. The histori-cal evidence shows that the nations that have not taken proper care of their lands have had to face extinction. Low agricultural production in India is said to be mainly on account of over exploitation of land arid excessive soil erosion.
