Evaluation of alternative management tools for recreational fishing of Thunnus thynnus in the Aegean Sea: CPUE of fishing contests data and analysis of You tube data
2023
López Mengual, Irene
This thesis focuses on the sustainable management of the popular recreational fishing target, Thunnus thynnus, given its high migratory nature. Limited data on the impact of recreational fishing hinders a comprehensive evaluation. The study introduces complementary tools using CPUE data from unconventional sources, such as fishing contests and YouTube. Analyzing tuna fishing contests in Turkey on the Urla Peninsula (2016-2022) using a GAM model, considering SST and Chlorophyll values, reveals a year-wise influence on CPUE. The average CPUE was 5.56±0.49 Kgday-1, peaking at 13.98 Kgday-1 in 2018. Catch outweighs Catch and Release, with the southern area having higher concentrations, possibly linked to tuna fattening cages. Although influenced by years, the model lacks complete environmental data. YouTube data analysis exhibits exponential growth, with keywords like "Yazili," "fishing," and "jigging." However, language bias poses challenges, emphasizing the need for caution in using this method for tuna species in future environmental management studies.
