Extract: There is an obvious agency need for a workable quarterly econometric model of the agricultural sector. This paper presents some preliminary work on such a model and describes some of the basic problems inherent in its construction and use. The model described is oriented toward the situation and outlook needs of the Economic Research Service, but is by no means a finished product. It does present a workable analytical framework for forecasting, however, and should serve as input into future efforts in this direction.
