Obese and overweight adults in the United States
1983
Abraham, Sidney
Abstract: Estimates of the prevalence of obesity and overweight in the US civilian non-institutionalized population, by sex and age, over the age range of 20-74 years, are presented for health nutritionists, physicians, nutritional epidemiologists, and other health professionals. Estimates of obesity were based on skinfold thickness data, while overweight was estimated from weight-height data. Comparisons were made between the 2 methods and the estimates presented are based on a cross-classification of the 2 methods. These results are reported and discussed. The findings were based on examinations of 13,131 people from a probability sample of 18,816 people, selected to represent the 122 million US people in this age population. The measurements were obtained from the 1st National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 1971-74. (wz).
