Abstract: Factors affecting the American food system are reviewed in this brochure to provide an understanding of the food economy. Supply and cost fluctuations that constantly challenge the farmer, the food manufacturer, the retailer, and the consumer are identified. Practical guidelines are provided for establishing a food budget, planning weekly menus, preparing shopping lists, and sharpening shopping skills. The following types of information commonly found on food product labels are explained: product name, product form, manufacturer's name and location, net quantity of content, number and size of servings, ingredients, preparation instructions, serving suggestions, recipes, nutrition labeling, open dating, and product guarantee.
