Sheridan, Margaret J. | McPherrin, Elizabeth G.
Abstract: An authoritative report discusses some of the nutritional concerns of fast foods, presents information on the nutrient content of various types of fast foods, and identifies the actual and potential nutrient contributions of fast food meals to the daily diet. The position is taken that, contrary to popular belief, fast food is not nutitionally worthless, and that it is possible to eat healthfully at fast food restaurants provided that a variety of foods are chosen from the basic 4 food groups in quantities appropriate to the individual's caloric needs. Consideration is given to the individual macro- and micro-nutrient content of fast foods, to the overall nutrition contribution they povide, and to the impact of fast food on the diet. A detailed summary of the specific nutrient contents of various foods offered by major fast food chains is appended. (wz).
