Astract: Practical recommendations for choosing an exercise program, and for selecting and preparing foods that are low in calories and fat, are presented in this text that emphasizes both as part of a low-fat lifestyle. Background information is presented on the definition and measurement of overweight and overfat, and the risks associated with "yo-yo" dieting. The calorie and fat content of common foods in each of the following groups are presented: milk products, cheese, lunch meats, sandwich spreads, fish, chicken, meat, eggs, legumes, and snacks. Recipe categories include 1) nibbles and bites, 2) soups, 3) main dish meats, 4) ground meat dishes, 5) poultry, 6) seafood, 7) fruits and vegetables, 8) sauces, 9) breads, and 10) desserts. Guidelines are provided for planning menus, interpreting nutrition labels, and modifying eating and activity behaviors.
