Extract: The general objective of this study is to examine whether counties can be classified into a "usefully small" number of prototype counties. The employment structure of each county is used to classify each county. The relationship between employment structure and location and community characteristics is then examined using a discriminant model. The empirical analysis is carried out with 1970 data for the North Central Region of the United States.
