The work ethic

Abstract: Marginal workers' and workaholics' attitudes toward the value of work and its place in their lives are examined to help supervisors understand and manage their employees more effectively. The influences of these attitudes on career development are explored. Initial discussion centers on development of positive work values; achievement of a balance between work and leisure; and teaching work values on the job. Work attitudes are traced from early American colonial days to the present, concluding with an analysis of the attitudinal differences between older and younger workers. A survey of current attitudes reveals that younger workers do not place as much importance on hard work as do older workers; younger workers also are less reluctant to accept welfare and family help.
