Abstract: Major classes of nutrients found in foods (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals) and guidelines for planning diets that provide enough of each one are briefly discussed in this brochure from the American Dietetic Association. Functions of the various nutrients are outlined. The contribution of exercise to good health is considered. Meal planning guidelines emphasize the importance of 1) selecting a wide variety of foods, 2) choosing nutritious snacks, and 3) moderating intake of high-calorie, high-fat, and high-sugar foods. A daily food guide shows sample foods and the number of recommended daily servings from each of the major food groups; meat, milk, fruits, and vegetables, breads and cereals.
