Abstract: Currently-available data and knowledge in the growing field of pediatric cardiology are presented by 28 authoritative clinicians and researchers to address present-day needs of the pediatrician, cardiologist, thoracic surgeon, pathologist, and other health-related professionals. A total of 62 topics are organized into 4 major sections: 1) background data in various aspects of normal and abnormal functioning of the young heart (e.g., heart sounds, blood pressure and hypertension, noninvasive examinations, and congenital heart disease development); 2) cardiovascular problems and their management (e.g., congestive heart failure, rheumatic heart disease, the heart in anemia, physical growth and cerebral complications in congenital heart disease); 3) particular malformations (shunts, conotruncal malpositions, obstructions); and 4) the heart in a variety of specific disorders. Data on useful drug dosages for children with heart disease are appended. (wz).
