This issue of the monograph reviews the physiological effects of the various components of dietary fiber, present research relative to the fiber hypothesis, the effect of fiber on serum lipids, the oat bran controversy, fiber and colon cancer, the use of fiber supplemented diets in diabetes, recommended intakes, adverse effects and some considerations for dietitians counseling those who wish to increase their fiber intake.
