It is important to know how much effort is expended on Gulf of Mexico shrimp population. effort along with commercial landings can be used to calculate catch per unit of effort which is an index of abundance. in order to calculate the total effort of the fleet, the effort index of vessels operating in the shrimp fishery must be determined where effort index is defined as the amount of fishing power that a vessel can exert in a day fished relative to that of a standard vessel. in the log linear model used in this analysis, horsepower and length of footrope determined the effort capacity of the vessel, while month, year, area and depth were used to standardize for abundance.
