Political, economic, and scientific objections to the new national dietary goals put forth in a 3-year study of the National Advisory Committee on Nutrition Education (NACNE) working party in Great Britain are discussed, as well as 5 nutrition strategies for implementing the NACNE recommendations, and the impact of these recommendations on the food chain. The long-term dietary goals propose substantial reductions in the national consumption of fat (25% for total fat; 40% for saturated fat), sugar (50%), and salt (25%), and a 50% increase in dietary fiber consumption. The differences in consumption of a wide variety of food types and in the contributions of these foods to altered nutrient intakes are contrasted between the 1981 national food survey and the new diet proposed by the NACNE report.
