Three basic techniques for the measurement of daily energy expenditure were examined for 6-12 months on 12 men in the Antarctic. The intake/balance technique calculates the mean energy expenditure from energy intake and total body, fat measurements. The factorial method uses energy cost of different activities as taken from previous research, on each individual. The heart rate method derives heart rate energy expenditure regression lines from a number of activities during which both parameters are calculated for mean daily heart rate. The use of heart rate to predict energy expenditure is the best method available for measurement of habitual energy expenditure. No method was accurate enough to predict fat gains or losses.
