A study on the self help group and their economic impact with respect to individuals - A rural and urban comparitive study

The study examined the impact of self help group (SHG) on empowerment, socio-economic status of the women respondents in pre and post - SHG situations in rural and urban area of the Coimbatore district. A multistage stratified random sampling technique with 50 self help groups, 25 from rural area and 25 from urban area and 5 members from each group, thus total of 250 members were selected as sample respondents. The method of data collection was by personal interview, a comprehensive interview schedule. The schedule for SHG members covered aspects such as general characteristics of members, family income, social participation, and other criteria related socio-economic development. The methodology used by the study was chow test, composite index and Garrett ranking. The results of chow test indicate statistically significant in average annual income, savings and assets had increased by 133.14%, 99.62%, and 100% in rural area and in urban area by 178.65%, 60.39% and 52.27% respectively. The result of composite index of standard of living shows that the standards of living were increased by 50% in rural and urban area in the district. The results of Garrett ranking shows that among the five problems experienced by them like delayed payment of loan, lack of government training, lack of record maintenance, lack of support from family members and price variability, lack of support from family members is the major problem in rural area and delayed payment of loan is the major problemin urban area.
