Tewatia, R.K.
Fertilisers have played and continue to play a vital role in increasing agriculture production in the country. Fertiliser industry in India has all along worked closely with the government and farmers to make this vital input available to nearly 129 million farm households in the country. Fertilisers have been accorded high priority in the agricultural development programmes in India ever since planned development began in the early 1950s. Considerable progress has been made in last five decades in terms of growth in consumption and product use pattern. Increased use of fertilisers along with high yielding varieties (HYVs) seeds and irrigation transformed Indian agriculture and brought green revolution in mid 1960s. The country emerged as the 3ʳᵈlargest producer, 2ⁿᵈ largest consumer and the largest importer of fertiliser in the world. The fertilisers played a key role in enabling the country to become self sufficient in foodgrain production. The dependences on fertilisers will increase to meet the increasing food demand of ever growing population. The paper discusses the historical developments in fertiliser sector in India.
