Ferritin metabolism in peripheral blood cells
1978
Methods and findings from studies of ferritin concentration and synthesis in lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes are reported. The relationship of the findings to current ideas on iron metabolism is discussed. The reduced ferritin content of polymorphonuclear monocytes and lymphocytes in iron deficiency represents the depletion of iron stores in cells other than those of the reticuloendothelial system. Low ferritin has been found in cells deriving from the bone marrow and lymphoid tissue. In the anemia of chronic disorders, these cells have increased iron content.
