Fluorine
1984
Messer, H.H.
A comprehensive review covers the occurrence of fluoride (F) in cells and tissues, its functions and deficiency states, and its metabolism and acute and chronic toxicity. It is noted that mineralized tissues contain about 99% of the total body F content, with the largest abundance found in bone. This review expresses the view that, while F supplementation has been effective in dental caries and osteoporosis prevention, sufficient evidence is lacking to qualify as an essential trace element. Explanations are offered for its metabolic transport and its in vivo effects, and for the mechanisms associated with its toxicity.(wz)
