Developments and trends in agriculture in Yorkshire
1980
Mosdell, K. B.
The paper focuses on dairying and describes how the diverse topography, soils and climate of the county have tended to concentrate milk production in the western parts. The social, economic and physical trends that have occurred since 1974 are examined and this reveals the fundamental changes which have occurred and are still occurring, in such a short space of time. The particular problems facing Yorkshire dairy farms are pinpointed and it is evident that the industry is experiencing a difficult phase, with barely adequate returns that do not permit the level of investment required to bring about necessary modernization. However, dairying in Yorkshire is a vigorous and resourceful industry which has changed much in the recent past and is capable of continuing change and improvement given the right incentives.
