human acquired immune deficiency syndrome, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is not principal cause of mortality in patients at Clinical Center of National Institutes of Health, therapy with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or pentamidine or both was usually successful in eradicating P. carinii, overwhelming cytomegalovirus viremia and its associated pulmonary and adrenal infections may be major contributors to death of such patients
