As expressed by the GMO panel of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) farm questionnaires may form a useful part of a GMO monitoring regime according to the demands of the Directive 2001/18/EC and the EC-Regulation 1829/2003.Based on the experience made since 2001 during the development and testing of farm questionnaires accompanying the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) herbicide tolerant and corn borer resistant maize in Germany, this tool should be further developed and adopted to other crop plants. In a current research project started in 2005 farm questionnaires for the cultivation of oil-seed rape, potato, sugar beet and wheat are developed and will be tested in agricultural practice. As up to now there are no, or only very few GMOs of these plant species, the questionnaires can merely be used to reflect the status quo of the production methods of these plants. An adaptation to genetically introduced traits is envisaged. The basic structure of the questionnaires will be presented. Their contents and the kind of information gathered will be elucidated.
