The theme of this volume is the second six months of life. It is not possible, however, to discuss nutrition during this time in isolation from the period immediately preceding it, early infancy, or that immediately following it, the young toddler period. At 6 months of age, the child is approaching rapidly the point at which mother's milk or an approved formula will cease to be his primary source of food and, by 12 months, he is ready to adopt the feeding patterns of the family. One of the scientific claims to be made in this review is that the way the mother responds to the dietary needs of her baby during this interface period will affect his long-term dietary habits, perhaps for a lifetime.
