Amelioration of Streptozotocin induced hyperglycemia in rats using combination of Gymnema sylvestre and Eugenia jambolana plant extracts

Diabetes is a disorder characterized by high prevalence and growing incidence. In order to curb this disorder, it is essential to search for effective antidiabetic agents with minimal side effects. Hence, medicinal plants have been used in the present study to evaluate the antihyperglycemic effect. The present study was taken up to evaluate the combined efficacy of Gymnema sylvestre and Eugenia jambolana in comparison with glibenclamide, as polyherbal therapies have synergistic, potentiating, agonistic/antagonistic pharmacological effects that work together to produce therapeutic efficacy with fewer side effects. The present study was conducted in Wistar albino rats, which were divided into five different groups of ten animals each. Diabetes was induced in rats with streptozotocin and treatments were administered by gavaging on a daily basis for a period of 45 days. Blood and serum samples were collected on 3ʳᵈ, 15ᵗʰ, 30ᵗʰ and 45ᵗʰ day and organ/tissue samples for histopathology were collected by sacrificing two animals from all groups on ?5ᵗʰ and 30ᵗʰ day and the remaining six animals on 45ᵗʰ day of the experiment. Rats of all the groups were subjected to evaluation of physiological, biochemical and hematological parameters and the findings were correlated with clinical signs and histopathology. Combination of Gymnema sylvestre and Eugenia jambolana hydroalcoholic extracts partially ameliorated diabetic effects induced by streptozotocin and the effects were comparable with that of the glibenclamide group. In addition, combination of Gymnema sylvestre and Eugenia jambolana at 100 mg and 200 mg/kg body weight showed similar effects which indicated that there was no dose dependent effect.
