A statement made on behalf of the American Dietetic Association at a public hearing on the Long-Range Plan to Combat Diabetes recommended the continuation of federal support of research into diabetes and obesity. Registered dietitians with advanced academic preparation and clinical experience should be members of research teams. Dietary counseling provided by registered dietitians may contribute to effective treatment with no undesirable side effects. Inclusion of nutrition as a component of health care throughout the entire course of the disease should significantly reduce the number requiring sick care service. The role of the Association in supporting quality in dietetics is outlined.
