A report out this week urging the U.S. government to lift spending on basic research to historically high levels will sound familiar to science policy wonks. But the argument that an investment in basic research is the best way to ensure prosperity and preserve the American dream is more relevant than ever, says Neal Lane, former presidential science adviser and co-chair of a panel of distinguished academics and business leaders assembled by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Referring to a raft of similar reports in the past decade, Lane says "the response from policymakers to date has been disappointing. But you can't give up on the political process."
