A study to understand the factors contributing to waterlogging was conducted in a small catchment of 5.4 ha in an irrigation scheme in the Eastern Dry Zone of Sri Lanka. An analysis, based on climatological data, extensive measurements of inflows, groundwater head fluctuations, soil moisture content variations and soil properties, indicated that a single catchment water balance and the SEW index are of limited value due to the spatial nature of the waterlogging problem in the this sloping catchment with surface irregularities. A distributed mathematical model was developed to represent the lateral and vertical components of flow; the agreement between the simulated and field results is satisfactory.
