Several strains of Penicillium stoloniferum and P. brevi compactum containing no virus like particles (VLP) synthesize mycophenolic acid (MA), an antiviral metabolite; one strain of P. stoloniferum producing more than 600 μg VLP/g dry weight mycelia synthesized no detectable MA. However, one strain of P. brevi compactum produced 5 μg VLP/g dry weight plus MA. Preliminary data suggest that MA may act as an antivirus in controlling fungal virus infection or its replication, or both.
