Equilibrium Relationships of Metal Chelates in Hydroponic Solutions

Stability-pH diagrams were developed to describe the equilibrium relationships of metal ions with chelating agents in nutrient solutions for the following chelating agents: EGTA, EDTA, DTPA, CDTA, and EDDHA. These stability diagrams give the concentration of each chelated metal species in solution in the pH range of 4 to 9 and provide a reliable means for selecting appropriate chelating agents for specific purposes. With increased pH, displacement of Fe³⁺ from the following chelating agents by divalent cations is in the order EGTA > EDTA > DTPA > CDTA > EDDHA. Similar developments can be extended to other chelating agents and to nutrient solutions of different composition.
