Adolescent perceptions of family health behavior: A tenth grade educational activity to increase family awareness of a community cardiovascular risk reduction program

Family health habits influence children's health behaviors. Later peer pressure can either reinforce or modify these practices and behaviors. Thus the family system, which provides communication and support networks, could be utilized to maintain and promote healthful behaviors. A 2-phase study focused first on surveying, then on intervening to determine if: 1) good communication between adolescents and parents would increase their knowledge of a community program to reduce cardiovascular risk factors (overweight, smoking, high cholesterol levels, stress, and exercise); 2) could adolescents act as change agents with respect to family health behavior; and 3) students perceived their role as change agents relative to health behaviors. Tenth graders studying health and driver education participated; to maximize homogeneity of the population data was reported only on 168 selected Angloes. the data showed: 1) adolescents are interested in health behaviors and in relationships detected within their families; 2) they already have formed ideas related to family health behavior and needs, 3) they do not see themselves as health advocates.
