Contributions to the improvement of the plum varietal assortment in Pitesti, Romania

The plum is a major species owing to its large grown acreage, production, various ways of marketing. Program started in the 50s at Istriţa - Buzau Station and continued thereafter at Marculesti, Voinesti, Tg, Jiu, Pitesti - Maracineni, Strejesti, Valcea and Bistrita. The objectives of the plum breeding in our country are similar to the ones from other countries, aiming at: productivity, fruit quality and disease resistance, Plum pox virus, particularly. The research methods involved were: cross pollination (intra and interspecific), clonal selection and mutagenesis. The present data show that within the plum genetic breeding program covering a 60 year work, over 1,500,000 flowers were pollinated and thousand hybrids were developed, presently 22 cultivars being recorded. Also, within the Genetics and Breeding Lab, there is a microfield trial with 60 promising selections out of which one was proposed to be tested by State Institute for Variety Testing and Registration Bucharest (ISTIS), going to be registered in the Official Catalogue for Cultural Plants in Romania. The great number of hybrid plants (over 5,000) in the selection field provides further on a high selection potential which is going to be materialized in the years to come.
