Effect of 65-year static soil fertilization on the growth, fruiting and leaf nutrient status of tart cherry trees

Results of field experiments with tart cherry trees cv. Schattenmorelle, budded on Prunus maheleb, kept in overall herbicide on 2 fields, with very different content of nutrients in soil, allow to make the following generalizations: among the nutrient elements investigated (N, P, K, Ca) it was potassium, which restricted most strongly the growth and yield of tart cherry trees. The response to potassium was diminished when the exchangeable potassium content in soil exceeded 8 mg/K/100 g and its content in leaves exceeded 1% K in d.m. Also considerable drop of yields due to an insufficient supply of soil with nitrogen took place, although the boundary values of this element in soil and leaves were hardly determinable. Acidification of soil led to a decrease of yield only when pH of soil did not exceed 4. In spite of a very heavy exhausting of KCl soils of available phosphorus forms (2 mgP/100 g of soil), the yield of tart cherry trees was not worse nor they contained less phosphorus in leaves.
