Selenium concentration in maternal and umbilical cord blood, placenta and amniotic membranes

Analysis for Se content of maternal and umbilical cord (UC) whole blood samples, and of several placental and amniotic membrane tissue specimens, in 21 Finnish parturients at term showed similar mean Se levels in maternal vs. UC blood (0.73 vs. 0.77 micromol/L and in placental vs. amniotic membrane tissue (2.24 vs. 2.32 micromal/kg (wet weight). The implications of the relatively low Se blood levels and the relatively high Se in placental and amniotic membranes are discussed. (wz)
