Light and thermal microclimate of 'Cannonau' and 'Bovale' grapevines under different light regimes - effects on physiological effectiveness of anthocyanin synthesis

Intensity and spectral quality of light, as well as canopy thermal conditions, are key microclimate factors of grapevines’ physiological performance, synthesis and accumulation of main berry compounds. To evaluate grapevine physiological responses to different light and thermal regimes and to assess the effectiveness for anthocyanin synthesis, two Sardinian red cultivars 'Cannonau' and 'Bovale', covered with different screening plastic films (Visible; UV-A+Visible), were studied in 2009. From veraison until harvest canopy, berry skin and flesh temperature were continuously acquired with thermocouples inserted into berries, in different cluster positions and canopy locations. Leaf gas exchanges and midday stem water potential were periodically measured to evaluate plants physiological status. To assess the physiological effectiveness for anthocyanin synthesis the Heat Normal Hours were computed and berry anthocyanins and total polyphenols content were measured during ripening. No significant differences were found among films for the main flesh berry compounds. The berry thermal regime seems to have induced differences in physiological effectiveness for anthocyanin synthesis expressed as berry total anthocyanin content.
