Children with myelomeningocele have shorter stature, greater body weight, and lower bone mineral content than healthy children

Nutritional status and radial bone mineral content were assessed in 32 patients with myelomeningocele (MMC) aged 2.3 to 12.7 years and in 30 healthy controls aged 2 to 15.2 years. Nineteen patients were ambulatory and 13 nonambulatory. Patients' stature and bone mineral content were significantly lower while body mass index and subscapular skinfolds were significantly higher than in controls. No significant differences were found in intakes of energy, protein, calcium, and phosphorus between patients and controls. The MMC children appear to be of short stature and at risk for bone demineralization, as well as for cardiovascular disease secondary to an excess of stored fat. These risk factors seem to depend upon reduced mobility rather than on excessive energy or reduced calcium intake.
