Zinc nutrition and taste acuity in school children with impaired growth
1980
Low zinc levels in hair and plasma were associated with children of poorer nutritional status and below average height for age, in a group of school children 9-12 years of age. Examination of taste acuity in these subjects indicated a statistically significant correlation between moderate to severe hypogeusia and reduced hair zinc content. Children with moderate or severe hypogeusia were also the least well nourished of the subjects. These data suggest that zinc deficiency may lead to growth retardation or anorexia in children.
