Whitebark pine is a mountain species, usually considered non-commercial throughout its range. However, it appears as a dominant tree in mixed stands with lodgepole pine and hybrid spruce. The lumber processed from these trees is sold as lodge-pole pine which is in Group III of the National Building Code of Canada's species groups. Preliminary mechanical testing of whitebark pine specimens indicates that the wood is relatively weak and that it should belong in the Building Code's species Group IV, e.g., with the white pines.
