To evaluate the effect of intake of mouldy maize on pig performance zearalenone from mouldy maize 0, 3, 6 and 9 mg/kg diet was given to 24 gilts, mean weight 64 kg, for 42 days. Rate of gain, feed intake and gain to feed ratio decreased with increasing amounts of mouldy maize. There seemed to be some adaptation to the higher amounts of mouldy maize with time. The same dietary treatments were used with 24 barrows and 24 gilts, initial weight 6.3 kg, in trial 2 and in trial 3; the same amounts of zearalenone given in trials 1 and 2 were given to 24 gilts, but a different sample of mouldy maize was used. Increasing amounts of mouldy maize resulted in decreased rate of gain. Swelling and redness of the vulvae were observed in gilts given diets with zearalenone 6 and 9 mg/kg. Uterine weight increased with increasing zearalenone in the diet, as did the thickness of the vaginal epithelium.
