Utilization of nitrogen gas for refrigeration and atmosphere modification in grain storage: a simulation study
2013
The growing demand for quality food requires new combinations of techniques to attack, effectively, the usual problems of storage. In this context, we highlight the atmosphere modification and refrigerated grain storage in tropical countries, as promising alternatives to the traditional storage systems. The aim of this study was to indicate low affected regions in the percolating process of a porous grain system with nitrogen gas, by simulating this process with commercial fluid dynamics software. The simulation took place in the transient regime, and equations that govern the fluid dynamic process were used as well as the characteristics of the corn. The results were analyzed as a function of time, starting with time "0 min" at the beginning of the process. The results showed that for the simulated dimensions, the efficient cooling was achieved in 35 min. The travelling fronts were stabilized after 10 min.
