Here, we characterize a protein family that forms a complex by oligomerization, which is required for bending of the thylakoid membrane. Without this complex, the typical thylakoid ultrastructure of land plant chloroplasts, composed of grana stacks and stroma lamellae, cannot develop. Strikingly, the loss of this active compartmentalization within thylakoids affects photosynthesis only moderately.
