Sexually mature Swiss mice were given either 10% fructose or 10% glucose in their drinking water for 7 days. Hypertriglyceridemia was not produced in spite of increased synthesis and secretion of triglyceride from the liver. The mean serum triglyceride content and conversion of acetate into triglyceride increased in the liver. The decrease in the plasma concentration seemed to be due to increased removal of circulating triglycerides as evidenced by increased lipoprotein lipase activity and increased removal rate of exogenously injected fat emulsion. Females showed greater incorporation of labelled acetate into triglycerides and higher lipolytic activity of the liver. Fructose had a stronger effect than glucose.
