Supplementary nutrition in cystic fibrosis
1986
The use of dietary approaches to aid weight gain in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients with growth failure is briefly reviewed and critically evaluated. A number of questions related to the use of invasive techniques for enteral feedings are raised and addressed. Literature findings suggest that invasive enteral techniques are of little value in improving chronic respiratory disease, and that, while growth can be stimulated and well-being improved in the short term, for long-term benefits it appears that supplemental feeding would have to be continued for very lengthy periods. Specific practical and dietary-related guidelines are summarized for preventing growth failure in CF children.(wz)
