Assessment of the adequacy of adolescent diets based on intake of the five food groups

A nutritional assessment of 63 boys (11-14 years old) in Australia was compiled based on personal hygiene, height, body mass, diet, skin, hair, eyesight, hearing, posture, coordination and foot condition. The objectives of the screening were to determine food intake patterns, to identify possible nutritional inadequacies from the 5 food groups, and to develop from the data an appropriate nutrition education program. A number of areas of nutrient intake were shown to be deficient in varying degrees: calcium, protein, iron, fiber, and vitamin B complex. Fruit and consumption was the worst in amount and variety; breakfast was eaten regularly, but seemed of poor quality; and dinner was generally well-balanced. The overall tendency seemed to be consumption of high energy food of low nutrient value, but overweight was not a problem in this group.
