Advice about milk for infants and young children
1987
A brief overview summarizes and discusses recent guidelines issued in an expert report by the Panel on Child Nutrition of the DHSS Advisory Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy, concerning the use of maternal breast milk, infant formulas, and cow's milk for feeding infants and young children. The report states that it was developed because the nutritional merit of unmodified, whole cow's milk has been questioned. The report recommends, among other things, that whole cow's milk should be a staple item for preschool children and that wholly skimmed milk is not recommended below 5 years of age. Relevant literature also is discussed.(wz)
