Analysis of body composition and adipose tissue cellularity in 227 middle-aged women, including 76 obese subjects, provides evidence of an association between childhood obesity and obesity in adulthood. Subjects were examined in 1968-69 and again in 1974-75. The following parameters were significantly related: body build in childhood (lean, normal or obese) and obesity in adulthood; body weights during the 2 examination periods; fat cell weight and weight index in the lower range; fat cell number and weight index; body cell mass and weight index; body cell mass and total fat cell number but not fat cell weight. A slight negative correlation was observed between body weight in 1967-69 and change in weight between the 2 time periods. There was no significant correlation between body cell mass and obesity in childhood. When age of onset was kept constant, degree of obesity and total fat cell number were significantly related; however, when degree of obesity was kept constant, no significant relation was found between age of onset and total fat cell number. Thus, these findings do not support the concept of a critical period in childhood during which excess fat cells develop.
